Man Killed by Black Bear at Arkansas Campground; Search Underway

A tragic incident occurred at Sam's Throne Campground in Arkansas. A 60-year-old man from Missouri was fatally attacked by a black bear, leading to the campground's closure while authorities search for the animal.

The victim's body was discovered Thursday near the campsite, bearing extensive wounds consistent with a large carnivore attack. Drag marks led into the woods, indicating a struggle. The cause of death was officially ruled an 'animal mauling', with the manner being an accident.

Authorities are on the hunt for a young male black bear, estimated to be 100 to 125 pounds, with some identifying markings. The bear is believed to be extremely habituated to the area and unafraid of humans, based on its encounter with the victim and another recent incident. Despite not being officially identified, the Arkansas State Crime Lab is awaiting DNA sampling to confirm the animal's identity.

Traps have been set to capture the bear, but baiting is proving challenging due to the bear's preference for acorns. Upon capture, the bear will be killed. The campground will remain closed until authorities are certain they have found the right bear.

The fatal attack at Sam's Throne Campground serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers in the animal kingdom. Authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of the public by locating and removing the bear from the area.
