Malawi's NICE Trust Mobilizes 10,000 Volunteers for Crucial 2025 Elections
Malawi's National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Trust is preparing for the 2025 general elections. With 10,000 volunteers nationwide, it's one of the country's most widespread institutions after the government and faith-based networks. The trust plays a crucial role in promoting peace and educating voters ahead of the polls.
NICE Trust works with traditional leaders and political figures to champion peace and issue-based campaigns. In the upcoming elections, it will engage communities to accept results peacefully and use legal channels for disputes. The trust also plays a multi-pronged role, including civic and voter education, election observation, and peace-building efforts.
New electoral laws will be tested in the 2025 elections, such as the 50% + 1 requirement for a presidential win and changes in constituency boundaries. Reports of political violence have already emerged, but NICE Trust is working to defuse tensions and prevent further incidents. The trust collaborates with various stakeholders, including civil society groups and the media, to ensure transparency and security during elections by tracking incidents and coordinating responses.
Voter registration faced challenges like resistance to new constituency boundaries, seasonal farming commitments, voter apathy, and logistical issues. Young people in Malawi are urged not to be used as agents of political violence and to work together to root it out. Weak law enforcement, impunity, and political interference are major obstacles in ending political violence in the country.
As Malawi prepares for its general elections on 16 September 2025, the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Trust is at the forefront, engaging communities, promoting peace, and educating voters. With new electoral laws in play and challenges like political violence, the trust's role is more important than ever in ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
