Lenfilm-debut lab prolongs the deadline for applications until April 7th
The Lenfilm studio, in collaboration with the Russian Ministry of Culture, is once again hosting the Lenfilm-debut Laboratory. This initiative aims to support and nurture young, ambitious filmmakers, providing them with the tools and guidance to create original, bright films.
The laboratory, now in its second year, is open to directors aged 18 and above who have not yet made their first full-length film. This year, the deadline for applications has been extended to April 7, 2024.
The application process requires a full-length debut film script, synopsis and annotation, author biographies, a director's statement, a motivational letter, and a portfolio containing one completed film work. Detailed information on how to prepare these documents can be found on the Lenfilm-debut laboratory's social media pages, including VKontakte and Telegram.
Ten selected contestants will be announced on April 30 and will have the opportunity to develop their scripts from June to December under the guidance of leading Russian directors. This year's curators include Alexander Veledinsky, Nikolai Homeriki, Maxim Pezhemsky, Aleksei Popogrebsky, Andrei Proshkin, Marina Razbezhkina, Anna Parmas, Lyubov Borisova, Bakur Bakuradze, and Natalia Meshchaninova.
The laboratory is free, and the organisers will cover accommodation and travel expenses to St. Petersburg. However, no information on covering travel and accommodation expenses for this year's laboratory has been provided yet.
The laboratory is focused on improving the quality of domestic debut projects and helping beginners integrate into the contemporary film context. The top ten finalists will work on refining their scripts into ready-to-launch projects under the guidance of industry professionals.
The competition juries in the previous year included film industry professionals appointed by Lenfilm Studio, though specific names are not publicly detailed. The second laboratory ended in December of the previous year.
The aim of the Lenfilm-debut Laboratory is to increase the number of original, bright films created by young authors. Further information about the laboratory can be found on various social media platforms, including VK, OK, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Twitter. The competition rules and application can be found at lenfilm-debut.ru.
The first Lenfilm-debut Laboratory took place in 2022, marking a significant step towards fostering new talent in the Russian film industry. This year, the laboratory continues its mission to support and empower the next generation of filmmakers.
