Leipzig receives climate change demands from Youth Climate organization: Clear expectations stated and delivered

On a sunny June morn, the 26th, BUND Leipzig rocked the Old Stock Exchange with an iconic event: the Youth Climate Council's demands unveiling, courtesy of the project "Youth.Climate.Now - Youth Climate Councils in Dresden and Leipzig." Commissioned students wrapped their heads around Leipzig's climate policy for months, collaborating to create their unique voices in the discussion.

Flaunting their handcrafted policies, juvenile advocates proceeded to present and formally deliver their paper to the city. As Minna, a Youth Climate Council member, stated, "We're putting our foot down, City of Leipzig. These aren’t wishes, but hardline expectations for an eco-friendly, future-friendly city."

The party extended an open invite to various Leipzig reps, such as Mayor Heiko Rosenthal and Simone Ariane Pflaum. In addition, highlights included representatives from the IHK, the consumer center, Leipzig energy cooperative, ADFC, students, scientists, Fridays for Future, state representatives, and hordes of curious journalists.

Following Heiko Rosenthal's and Thomas Früh's opening statements, our young activists dusted off their chalkboards and shared their demands. A whopping 20 demands gave the run-down on traffic, education, social justice, and urban planning. (Of course, you can peruse all 20 demands by visiting www.bund-leipzig.de/jugendklimarat.)

Paula Krollik, our Youth Climate Council project leader, spoke up, "Ain't no rest for the wicked. After this demands drop, we want all city players to get their act together and turn our demands into deeds."

Those demands? Many have been swirling around the Leipzig city council since time immemorial - from cyclist-friendly infrastructure and refined public transit to green spaces over high-rise parking structures.

The second half of the event called upon the participants to engage in spirited discussions, addressed by four guiding questions. This sparked a buzzing exchange between the young and the old, driving home the urgent necessity to push the demands forward in the political sphere.

Post-event, Johann Singer, Energy and Climate Protection Coordinator of the City of Leipzig, raved, "The younguns arrived with a storm of energy, inspiration, and demands for a sustainable city. Let's not kid ourselves, we need civilians like them to add some muscle to our municipal debates and help secure more budgets and personnel in city administration."

Mark your calendars, folks, because the Youth Climate Council project ain't stopping at the demands drop. On August 29th, they'll team up with the Pling Collective for a public campaign creation meeting, ensuring their demands stay fresh on everyone's lips.

  1. Recognizing the demands presented by the Youth Climate Council, environmental science becomes crucial in implementing eco-friendly policies that cater to a future-friendly city.
  2. In line with the learning and lifelong-development emphasized by the event, it's essential to foster education and self-development initiatives that instill an understanding of climate-change and its solutions within the youth.
  3. As the Youth Climate Council's project signifies, the intersection of science, climate-change, and environmental-science is vital in shaping a sustainable city that responds to the demands of young advocates like themselves.
