The cherry on top? An additional 8.8 million euros is earmarked for the project partners. These include an eclectic mix of players such as the city of Zeitz, Anhalt University, Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Burg Giebichenstein Art University Halle, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, and the Forum Rathenau.
What's more, this project will operate as a "real lab" – essentially a research workshop and test space for simultaneous research, testing, and application. The main focus will be on sustainable, circular, and climate-neutral construction, as well as aesthetics, innovative designs, and artistic design possibilities.
And here's the kicker – this project in Saxony-Anhalt is the largest NEB project in the region and the sole real lab! Completion is slated for the end of 2027. The revitalization plans include the former administration building, the wasteland, and the ground floor of the main building from the once-European Zeitz pram factory.
The site at the city center of Zeitz, in the Burgenland district, has been empty since the early '90s. The GmbH (formerly the VEB) still exists, with production having been shifted to the Far East.
So, what's next? Under the banner of "New European Bauhaus", the EU is inviting society to brainstorm innovative ideas for coexistence. Citizens, urban planners, entrepreneurs, scientists, architects, and designers – you name it – are encouraged to share their thoughts and network. And just in case you're wondering, several projects in the state are being supported with EU funds from the Just Transition Fund for the Central German region. The state is using the fund to generate concrete projects in the Saxony-Anhalt lignite region.
The funding pot for the Saxony-Anhalt NEB initiative is jam-packed with 44 million euros. The state initiative officially launched in August 2023 and projects in the districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld, Mansfeld-South Harz, Saalekreis, Burgenlandkreis, and the city of Halle are eligible for funding.
