KuzSTU Freshmen Initiated into Mining with Open-Pit Visit

First-year students of Kuzbass State Technical University (KuzSTU) recently took part in a traditional ceremony marking their initiation into the mining industry. The event, held annually since 2023, saw nearly 300 students visit an open-pit mine and an open-air museum of mining equipment. The highlight was a commemorative photo in front of a 220-ton dump truck, offering a panoramic view of the open-pit mining operations.

The ceremony, organised by JSC 'Kuzbassrazrezugol', the second-largest coal producer in Russia, aims to welcome new talent into the mining sector. The company uses open-pit mining methods in the Kemerovo region, employing graduates of KuzSTU, its key partner in training personnel. Almost 80% of all engineering and technical workers at 'Kuzbassrazrezugol' are alumni of the university.

During the ceremony, students had the opportunity to explore the vast open-pit mine and learn about the history and evolution of mining equipment at the open-air museum. The experience provided a practical introduction to the industry they will soon join for their industrial practice.

The annual ceremony serves as a bridge between education and industry, fostering a connection between KuzSTU and JSC 'Kuzbassrazrezugol'. It offers first-year students a glimpse into their future roles, with many expected to return for industrial practice and eventually join the workforce, contributing to Russia's coal production.
