Journalist Mario Guevara, known for documenting immigration raids, has been deported to El Salvador. This follows a lengthy legal battle and widespread calls for his release from press freedom groups and prominent figures.

Guevara's journey began in 2004 when he fled El Salvador due to death threats related to his reporting. He sought asylum in the US in 2005. In July 2022, an immigration judge ordered his release on bond, but ICE detained him even after this ruling.

ICE argued that Guevara's live-streaming of law enforcement activities posed a risk to their work. However, dozens of press freedom groups and over 100 leading writers, journalists, and scholars advocated for his release, citing his journalistic work and the threat to press freedom.

Despite an immigration appeals court granting a stay to block Guevara's bond and allow his continued detention, he was ultimately deported. His release in 2022 was not approved due to likely not meeting the necessary legal or procedural requirements for asylum. Guevara's deportation highlights ongoing concerns about press freedom and the treatment of journalists in the US.
