IT Youth Programme in Estonia welcomes 80 Ukrainian adults to start their IT careers
New Program Launches in Ukraine: kood/Zhytomyr Opens Doors to Diverse Students
A new chapter in Ukraine's technology education has begun with the launch of kood/Zhytomyr, a programming school focused on practical IT education for adults. The school, located in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, was opened in cooperation with Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University, and its first cohort of 80 students is set to begin their studies in a hybrid format.
The first cohort boasts a diverse background, with previous studies ranging from IT and engineering to business, law, linguistics, and medicine. Work experience spans fields such as software development, education, public safety, sales, healthcare, and the military. This diversity is a testament to kood/Zhytomyr's commitment to making technology education accessible to all.
The 12-18 month curriculum at kood is based on self-directed and peer-to-peer learning, covering full-stack software development, teamwork, and problem solving. Students can later specialize in fields such as cybersecurity, data analysis, mobile applications, and AI.
The launch of kood/Zhytomyr was supported by ESTDEV, and the City of Tallinn donated computers and monitors to the University for the program. Margus Gering, ESTDEV's Head of Europe and Ukraine Reconstruction, stated that Ukraine is a significant development cooperation partner.
One participant, Olha (40) from Mykolaiv, joined the kood/Empower sprint to try programming as a new field and seek new opportunities. So far, over 1,500 students have attended kool in Estonia and Finland, with over 350 graduates, nearly two-thirds of whom are working in the technology sector.
Mari-Liis Kitter, co-founder of kood, mentioned that Ukrainian women have been a significant part of their student body in Estonia and some are now tutors in Zhytomyr. The third Selection Sprint was dedicated exclusively to women, with 22 women between 19 and 45 years old participating.
Sirje Karis, First Lady of Estonia, noted that IT-skills are essential for freedom, creativity, and resilience, and expressed gladness that many women are part of the first class of kood/Zhytomyr. kood, founded in Jõhvi, Estonia in 2021, aims to continue its long-term commitment to Ukraine and expand the program to other regions with local partners.
While the person involved in the founding of kood and who spoke at the opening of kood/Zhytomyr remains unnamed, the school's mission is clear: to provide practical, accessible IT education to adults in Ukraine, helping to strengthen the country's technology education and the development of IT skills in practical adult learning.
