Investment secured by battery innovator Lyten, amounting to $200 million dollars.
Lyten Expands Lithium-Sulfur Battery Production with Acquisition of Northvolt's Gdansk Facility
Lyten, a leading lithium-sulfur battery developer, has announced the acquisition of Northvolt's Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) production facility in Gdansk, Poland. This move is part of a broader expansion strategy that involves multiple Northvolt assets across Europe and the US.
The acquisition includes Northvolt's energy storage product portfolio, such as the Voltpack Mobile Systems (VMS) and Voltrack, and the integration of key local development team members in Sweden. Lyten plans to restart BESS production in Gdansk by the end of 2025, targeting first deliveries in Q4 2025.
This is one of several acquisitions Lyten has made in the past year, including Northvolt’s Cuberg battery production business in California and other European assets in Sweden and Germany. Lyten has raised over $200 million in new equity capital, bringing total funding over $625 million, to support this aggressive expansion and acquisition strategy in both Europe and the US.
Production in Gdansk will focus on restarting and scaling manufacturing operations using advanced lithium-sulfur battery technology. The acquired portfolio includes Northvolt’s BESS products such as Voltpack Mobile Systems (VMS), currently in its third generation with commercial deployments across Europe, and Voltrack stationary battery solutions.
Lyten is expanding its stationary energy storage solutions for applications in data centers, industry, and grid operations. Besides existing products, Lyten is integrating future BESS products currently in development by Northvolt’s engineering team, which is now joining Lyten in Stockholm, Sweden.
Initial target customers for the products manufactured in Gdansk are existing European customers. Following Europe, Lyten aims to expand globally with applications in data centers, industrial sectors, and grid storage markets in more than 20 countries. The acquisition enables Lyten to strengthen its position as a global leader in lithium-sulfur batteries and energy storage solutions, addressing rapidly growing demand for advanced BESS technologies.
In summary, Lyten’s acquisition of Northvolt’s Gdansk facility and associated assets represents a major step in its strategy to expand lithium-sulfur battery production and battery energy storage system offerings, focusing initially on Europe with plans for global market penetration by late 2025.
- In its expansion strategy, Lyten aims to leverage the acquired Voltpack Mobile Systems (VMS) and Voltrack stationary battery solutions from Northvolt for applications in education-and-self-development, such as powering e-learning facilities or research labs.
- As part of its global expansion plans, Lyten intends to apply its advanced lithium-sulfur battery technology to sports applications, targeting energy storage solutions for stadiums and athletic training facilities.
