Title: Philippe Sands Wins Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize for International Law Expertise

  • Hey there!*

British-French legal scholar and author Philippe Sands will bag the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize from the city of Osnabrück. Set to be awarded next Thursday, the prize – worth €25,000 – has been announced by the city's spokesperson.

Sands, a professor at University College London and a visiting professor at Harvard Law School, also practices law before the International Court of Justice and other international judiciaries.

His Grandfather's Tale

In his book "Return to Lemberg," Sands pens down his grandfather's harrowing escape from Austria following its forced annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938. Osnabrück's University President, Susanne Menzel-Riedl, applauded the book for shedding light on legal concepts like 'genocide' and 'crimes against humanity'.

Osnabrück's mayor, Katharina Pötter (CDU), commended Sands for illuminating the importance of preserving international law, especially in an interconnected world where it shapes acceptable behavior.

Special Prize for "Trialog" Project

This year's exceptional prize, worth €5,000, goes to the "Trialog" project by Jouanna Hassoun and Shai Hoffmann. Post October 7, 2023, Hamas' attack on Israel, they have been visiting schools across Germany, discussing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Their Jewish-Israeli and Muslim-Palestinian backgrounds offer unique perspectives on the emotional challenges of this ongoing strife.

Osnabrück's Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize, named after the city's native author, has been granted every two years since 1991 – this marks the 17th time.
