Information on Voting: Key Points to Consider before Participating in Virginia's Significant General Election
General Election 2025: A Historic Vote for Virginia
On November 4, 2025, Virginia voters will head to the polls for a significant election, one that promises to make history. Here's a rundown of some of the key races and dates to remember.
Gubernatorial Race
The race for governor is particularly noteworthy, with several candidates vying for the position. Abigail Spanberger, a three-term congresswoman representing Virginia's 7th District, is running for governor after making history as the first woman to represent this district. Winsome Earle-Sears, the current lieutenant governor, is also in the running. If elected, she would become the first woman to govern the commonwealth and the first Black woman to hold a statewide office.
Attorney General Race
The race for attorney general is equally compelling. Jay Jones, an incumbent, is running, and if elected, he would become Virginia's first Black elected attorney general.
House of Delegates
All 100 seats in the House of Delegates are up for grabs. Notable races include House District 62, where Karen Hamilton (R) and Sara Ratcliffe (D) are running, and House District 22, where Ian T. Lovejoy (R-Incumbent) and Elizabeth R. Guzman (D) are competing. In House District 21, Joshua E. Thomas (D-Incumbent) and Gregory Lee 'Greg' Gorham (R) are facing off.
Local Races
Ballots in many localities will also feature competitive races for county boards, town councils, school boards, and city offices. For instance, in Stafford County, Kelly M. Robertson (I), Henry S. 'Hank' Scharpenberg (R), and Lori C. Hayes (I-Incumbent) are running for positions in the Board of Supervisors. In Spotsylvania County, Marcus T. Oats (I), Marcus A. Garcia (I), and Baron P. Braswell (I) are contesting for seats on the Board of Supervisors.
Key Dates
Key deadlines for the elections include October 24 for voter registration/registration updates, October 24 for applying for a ballot by mail, and October 25 through Election Day for in-person same-day registration with a provisional ballot. Voter registration offices will be open for in-person early voting on October 25. Early voting for Virginia's 2025 general and special elections is currently underway.
