Increased School Traffic Incidents in PP Ravensburg - Police Chief Urges Caution from Motorists
In the Ravensburg, Sigmaringen, and Bodensee Districts, Police President Uwe Stürmer has called for road users to exercise caution and consideration as schools reopen, following a significant increase in school route accidents in the first seven months of 2025.
According to the Ravensburg Police Headquarters, a total of 46 people were injured, one seriously, due to these accidents. The majority of the injured were children under 14, with more than half being cyclists.
The police have recorded a rise in school route accidents, with numbers increasing from 24 to 42 compared to the same period last year. In response, the police will be increasing their presence on school routes and conducting appropriate checks at the start of the school year.
The causes of these accidents include improper use of pedestrian and cycle paths, incorrect entry into flowing traffic, distraction, disregard for right of way, as well as inappropriate speed.
To promote road traffic safety education for children, the Ravensburg Police Directorate cooperates with schools, kindergartens, local government authorities, and traffic safety organizations. The police also recommend that children riding bikes to school independently have a functioning light and wear highly visible clothing with reflective elements in preparation for the darker months ahead.
Parents are encouraged to practice correct behavior on the school route with their child and draw their attention to hazardous areas. For more information, visit the Ravensburg Police Headquarters official website at https://www.polizei-ravensburg.de.
