Brandenburg's schools are embracing an escalating number of lateral entrants, combating the burgeoning teacher shortage. With the school year 2024/2025 underway, this figure has spiked to an astounding 4,500, as per the state's Ministry of Education's report to the German Press Agency. This equates to around 20.3% of the total teaching workforce - surpassing the national average.

In the previous school years, the numbers tell a different story. For the school year 2023/2024, the figure stood at 3,820, accounting for 17.7% of all teachers. While in the school year 2022/2023, the count was 3,222, representing 15.4% of the teaching corps.

The Ministry of Education clarified that these figures are averages for the entire state, meaning regional variations exist. Urban areas near Berlin exhibit a lower percentage of lateral entrants, while the rural regions show higher figures.

employer bankrupt, educators burnt out!

Brandenburg grapples with a teacher shortage, giving rise to these lateral entrants. Teachers in the state are anticipating additional hours in the classroom, starting from the second half of the next school year due to financial difficulties, exempting vocational and special needs schools.

At the national level, General schools are increasingly resorting to lateral and lateral entrants, propelled by teacher shortages. Data from the Federal Statistical Office reveals that about 10.5% of teachers in the 2023/24 school year didn't have a recognized teaching degree. This translates to approximately 77,600 of the total 739,500 teachers - a figure that was 9.8% in the 2022/23 school year.

One for all, all for Brandenburg... and Germany

While Brandenburg's education system faces unique challenges, it is part of Germany's broader educational landscape, sharing similar hurdles regarding teacher recruitment and retention. The demand for lateral entrants could be attributed to the widespread teacher shortage and the associated reasons, such as low wages, insecurity, and heavy workloads.

  1. In light of the escalating teacher shortage in Brandenburg, there's an increased emphasis on community policy, focusing on vocational training and education-and-self-development, to attract more teaching professionals.
  2. The surge of lateral entrants in Brandenburg schools, a response to the teacher shortage, is a political issue not limited to the state, as general-news reports show an increasing trend of this phenomenon across Germany due to similar challenges in teacher recruitment and retention.
