Chittagong University Extends Deadline for Cucsu Nomination Papers

In a significant development, the Chittagong University Election Commission has extended the deadline for the submission of nomination papers for the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (Cucsu) and hall union elections. The decision comes in response to a request made by the Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the ruling party.

As it stands, candidates can now submit their nominations until 5pm tomorrow (18 September). This extension of the deadline by one day follows a similar move made by the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu).

The request for an extension was made to the Election Commission Committee of Chittagong University following a written request from the Chhatra Dal General Secretary, Abdullah Al Noman. The commission later approved the request in an emergency meeting.

As of today (17 September), a total of 1,162 nomination papers have been distributed for the Cucsu and hall union elections. Of these, 528 were for the central union and 634 for the hall union. So far, 371 nomination papers have been submitted, with 125 for Cucsu and 246 for the hall union.

This extension is particularly important as it will be the first election at Chittagong University in 35 years. In light of this historical event, the Chhatra Dal is making every effort to ensure a fair and peaceful election. They plan to contest the election in coordination with students injured in the recent clash between local residents and students on campus.

In addition, the Chhatra Dal also plans to form a coalition with other groups to field a joint panel. The preliminary list of candidates for the Cucsu and hall union elections will be published on 21 September, with the final list announced on 25 September. Objections and settlements will be completed by 24 September.

It's worth noting that Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir Uddin is currently in Chattogram city, accompanied by three central leaders, to coordinate the election efforts.

The Cucsu and hall union elections are scheduled to be held on 12 October. With the extension of the deadline for nomination papers, the stage is set for a competitive and engaging election at Chittagong University.
