Here's the Tea on Tech Stress in Schools

Technological Strain Impacting Educators - The Heavy Responsibilities That Are Overwhelming Educators - Impact of Digitalisation on Educators: Examining Pressure Levels

'Sup, it's all about tech woes in schools these days. Digitization? Big time. But it's not all peaches and cream, no siree. Teachers are drowning in technical issues and digital stress.

Thilo Hartmann, chair of the Education and Science Union (GEW) in Hesse, spills the tea: ’Folks, digitalization is putting a significant burden on teachers, causing digital stress in schools. Teachers depend on technology functioning properly, but when it doesn't, they've gotta handle it solo because there ain't much assistance to be found.*

Many schools barely cope with IT support—it's the tech-savvy few who help out. Imagine accepting a teaching gig and then handling the IT dept. on the side—not ideal, right? Sometimes school leaders get a slight time reduction. Oh, and at smaller schools—IT issues are just added to everything else on their plate.

Maintaining devices is no walk in the park. At bigger schools, with thousands of students and over 100 teachers, the burden is immense. Imagine explaining to your boss that you can't finish reports because your computer isn't working—that's kinda what these teachers deal with each day.

So what's the Mayor of Kassel doing to help teachers cope? The IT Supporter@School project is here to save the day! The city has hired twelve IT supporters who help six schools. 'Cause you know, teachers don't need this extra drama. Kassel has realized they can’t keep this tech support responsibility on the teaching staff anymore.

Thorben Schröder, an IT supporter shared the deets: He aids teachers with on-site problems, acts as point-person for requests, and makes regular visits. Stuck with a broken iPad? Fear not, the IT supporter's here to help.

Carsten Horstmann, the deputy principal of the Johann-Amos-Comenius School is loving the change. ’Now, I don't have to deal with tech issues all the time. It’s become much more pleasant,’ he says.

What's the deal with the digital infrastructure in schools? Turns out, it's thanks to the government's Digital Pact I. Now the focus is on helping just over 50 schools in Kassel maintain a digital teaching environment that just works.

But hold up, the Hessian Ministry of Culture points out: ’The digitalization of schools equals a maze of complexity. Considerable progress has been made, but there's still much legwork to do in adapting structures, fostering competencies, and ensuring resources.

Now hear this: Digitalization is all about making teaching easier for teachers, ensuring every student receives personalized help. Digital apps make life easier for teachers in many ways, says the ministry. Yet, they also advocate for expanded tech support that takes the edge off teachers' daily lives.

The latest developments in Hessian schools are impressive, thanks in part to government funding that's boosted investments in school tech infrastructure—ensuring a crucial foundation for modern teaching!

But wait, there's more. GEW shares their two cents: ’ Yeah, digitalization in schools got a major boost due to the pandemic. However, we've still got a long way to go. Basic funding is needed to bridge the tech gap soon, and existing equipment can't be ignored—it's due for an upgrade. Oh, and addressing digital media literacy is high on our list.

So there you have it—tech stress in schools is a real issue. Projects like IT Supporter@School in Kassel are stepping up to help teachers cope. With the right support, digitalization can empower educators and provide an engaging learning environment for students.
