Holiday festivities held at Notre Dame Cathedral
Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College in Leeds has been a hub of charitable activities this Advent season, with students and staff coming together to support various causes close to their hearts.
The Advent charities appeal was launched at the college, marking the beginning of a series of events designed to instil a sense of community spirit and foster skills such as teamwork and time management. The first advent candle was lit in each assembly, symbolising the beginning of the season of preparation and anticipation.
The BTEC Musical Theatre students took centre stage with a Christmas showcase, delighting audiences with festive hits and numbers from various musicals. Meanwhile, the Upper Sixth T level Business students organised a charity event to collect toys for Leeds Children's Hospitals, spreading joy to those in need during the holiday season.
A nativity photobooth, organised by the new Lay Chaplain, Anne Merry, was a popular attraction, allowing staff and students to dress up and pose as nativity characters. A competition was held for the best staff photo, adding a fun and competitive edge to the event.
The annual carol service was held in the Chapel, inviting students, staff, and friends of Notre Dame. Lower Sixth student Liam Bediako played the organ, while Michael Burt served as conductor, creating a beautiful and harmonious atmosphere. Carols ranged from traditional favourites like 'O Come All Ye Faithful' and 'O Come, O Come, Emmanuel' to 'The Night that Christ was Born' and 'Silent Night'.
Students were encouraged to be creative in their fundraising methods, with bake sales and raffles being popular choices. The meaning of advent was explained during the assemblies, reminding everyone of the season's significance.
In addition, students gave bible readings and read community prayers, reinforcing the spiritual aspect of the celebrations. Lower Sixth students are also making Christmas cards for local care home residents as part of an act of service.
While specific charity events directly organised by Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College may not be detailed in the public record, the college appears to be engaged in or supportive of the wider Catholic community's charitable activities. Local Leeds Catholic events like the Lourdes Dinner Dance and Little Sisters fundraising are examples of regional charity efforts, potentially involving college staff or students indirectly.
This act of service is part of the Stella Maris Leadership Award, a programme that teaches students the impact of small acts of kindness and encourages them to make a difference in the lives of others. The college's commitment to charity and community service is a testament to its values and the spirit of giving that has permeated its halls this Advent season.
