Nature and Meeting Center e.V. at Raüscherweg Continues to Promote Environmental Education in Düsseldorf

The Nature and Meeting Center e.V., located in the historical school garden Raüscherweg in Düsseldorf, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting environmental education, nature experiences, and community engagement. The centre, which has been active since 1996, is supported by a dedicated association with over 150 members from across the city.

The foundation board consists of Gisela and Dieter Schnelle, Hergen Reker from the Putlitz-Berge (Brandenburg) office, and Doris Törkel, head of the garden office of the state capital Düsseldorf. The association's activities include events in the school garden for environmental education of children, young people, and adults.

The centre, which is linked to the historical tradition of the Raüscherweg school garden, serves as a venue for nature experiences, workshops, environmental education programs, and community meetings. These activities emphasise ecological awareness and hands-on learning opportunities connected to the local environment and history.

Recently, the foundation received a prize of 6,800 euros, which will be used to maintain and care for the school garden's orchard meadows. The prize money will be allocated towards pruning around 80 fruit trees, installing a browsing protection for the trees on the sheep pasture, and cutting back the blackberry hedges.

The foundation, established in November 2017, aims to preserve nature and the environment, and its activities extend beyond Düsseldorf, as it operates in Putlitz-Berge (Brandenburg) as well. The school garden, which covers an area of almost one hectare, also functions as an inner-city green space.

The preservation of the historical school garden facility is an important concern, serving as a place for contemporary environmental education and a teaching and learning place for Düsseldorf school classes and kindergartens. The orchard meadows have arisen from the historical use of the garden and are maintained and cared for by the support association.

The award ceremony was attended by Mayor Burkhard Hintzsche, foundation founders Gisela and Dieter Schnelle, representatives of the support association, the garden office, and the treasury. The foundation honours an annual "good deed" with a monetary prize, alternating between Putlitz-Berge (Brandenburg) and Düsseldorf.

For more precise historical details and a more comprehensive description of this specific centre, local Düsseldorf cultural or educational archives or the association’s own publications would be the best sources.

  1. The Nature and Meeting Center e.V. is not only a venue for environmental education in Düsseldorf, but also offers opportunities for hands-on learning in science, particularly in the field of environmental science, as part of their events.
  2. To further promote education and self-development, the foundation plans to use a portion of the recent prize money to establish a program that combines nature experiences with interactive educational activities, thereby enhancing public understanding of environmental science.
