Heidelberg & Mannheim Medical Faculties Merge, Creating Germany's Largest
The University Hospitals of Heidelberg and Mannheim are set to merge their medical faculties, creating one of the largest in Germany. This alliance, to be officially realized at the start of next year, will strengthen research, teaching, and clinical practice in the region.
The merger is supported by joint participation in cancer research centers like the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the DKFZ-Hector Cancer Institute. These centers, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and Baden-Württemberg, facilitate rapid translation of innovative diagnostics and therapies. Additionally, projects like the NoPICS-Kids study, backed by nearly €9.6 million, will improve pediatric intensive care.
The alliance will strengthen the region's international standing, as highlighted by the Dean of the Medical Faculty Mannheim. The merged faculty will offer outstanding conditions for basic research, professional training, and clinical practice transfer. The renowned study programs MaReCuM and HeiCuMed in human medicine will continue, ensuring future-proofed doctor training.
The Rector of the University of Heidelberg welcomes the alliance, thanking participating ministries and the state for this strategic decision. The alliance enables cross-site structural planning, driving the hospital alliance and new united faculty forward in research, teaching, and clinical practice.
By January 2027, the University of Heidelberg will merge its Medical Faculty Heidelberg and Mannheim into one. This alliance strengthens the Health & Life Science Alliance Heidelberg Mannheim innovation campus, aiming to attract national and international top talent in medicine and science.
