Halton School Board Chair Invites Premier to Collaborate on Trustee Role

The longest-serving democratically elected position in Canada, School Board Trustees, has been serving communities since 1816. On September 24, 2025, Amy Collard, Chair of the Halton District School Board, wrote to the Premier and Minister of Education, inviting them to collaborate on systemic issues and achieve province-wide consistency.

The letter, signed by Amy Collard, requests public consultation before altering the Education Act regarding the role of Trustees. Trustees, responsible for overseeing local school boards, support the Ministry in implementing provincial curricula and strategies. They also engage with stakeholders, address parents' concerns, and assist students and families in navigating the education system.

The resolution was unanimously passed by the Board of Trustees at their September 16 meeting. The letter was sent to various parties, including MPPs, Ontario Public School Boards' Association, OSTA-ACO, Presidents of Provincial Unions, and the media.

The Halton District School Board Trustees, through their Chair Amy Collard, have reached out to the Premier and Minister of Education, seeking collaboration and public consultation. The aim is to ensure the Education Act reflects the crucial role of Trustees and maintains consistency across the province.
