Ghana Holds Inaugural Legal Technology Competition to Tackle Justice Access Barriers in Africa

In a groundbreaking event, the Africa Legaltech Hackathon held at the Google Office in Accra, Ghana, saw Team Advis emerge victorious with their innovative AI-powered legal assistant platform. This platform aims to democratize justice by making legal assistance more accessible and affordable for individuals in Ghana's legal system.

The hackathon, a collaboration between Legaltech Lounge and Because She Can, marked a significant milestone in the African legaltech landscape. With an initial pool of 50 applications, eight teams from ten universities were selected to compete. The success of the event demonstrated the potential for world-class innovation from African talent and served as a catalyst for real-world innovation in Legaltech.

Team Advis' platform offers step-by-step guidance, document review, lawyer referrals, and ongoing support, and is multilingual in Twi, Ga, and Ewe. The AI-driven legal assistant empowers self-represented individuals by providing them with intelligent, personalized legal guidance. This approach directly contributes to democratizing justice by expanding access beyond the limitations of cost, geography, and availability of legal professionals.

The AI-powered legal assistant platforms, like the one developed by Team Advis, are becoming increasingly common in the legal tech landscape. These platforms aim to reduce barriers to legal services by automating routine legal tasks, providing on-demand legal information, and simplifying complex legal processes for the public. This approach directly contributes to democratizing justice by expanding access beyond the limitations of cost, geography, and availability of legal professionals.

Vint & Alethia Attorneys & Consultants presented two special recognitions at the Africa Legaltech Hackathon. Team PrimeOps won Most Promising Solution for their AI-powered Online Dispute Resolution platform, while Team Legalis, the first runner-up, introduced an AI-driven legal research and document management platform for African legal systems. Marcia Achiaa Antwi from Team LegalX was awarded Best Female Participant.

Michel Nkansah, Founder of Legaltech Lounge, expressed optimism about the future of African legaltech solutions. Kweyakie Blebo, co-founder of Because She Can, emphasized the importance of inclusion and bold thinking in the legaltech ecosystem. Both Team Advis and Team Legalis will showcase their innovations at this year's Accra Lawtech Hangout.

The Africa Legal Hackathon marked the beginning of a movement, with the Africa Legal Hackathon 2025 already shaping the next chapter. As these innovative solutions continue to evolve, the legal landscape in Africa is poised for significant transformation, making legal services more accessible and affordable for all.
