Four-year-old son dies, Ohio mother faces aggravated murder charges
In a shocking turn of events, Ruth Miller, a resident of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, is facing two counts of aggravated murder for the death of her 4-year-old son, Vincen Miller. The tragic incident occurred at Atwood Lake, where the bodies of both Vincen and his father, 45-year-old Marcus Miller, were found at the lake's bottom.
The Tuscarawas County Prosecutor's Office stated that Vincen's death was a result of aggravated murder, as Miller allegedly acted with "prior calculation and design." The charges against Miller were filed after an investigation into what was initially believed to be an accident.
On Saturday, authorities received calls about a golf cart incident involving Miller and three teenagers, which resulted in the golf cart flipping into the water. Witnesses reported seeing Miller driving a golf cart erratically with a young boy around 8 a.m. on the day of the incident.
Further questioning revealed that Miller admitted to throwing Vincen into the lake as an offering to God. Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell described Miller's actions as a "spiritual delusion." Miller's husband and Vincen were reported missing shortly after, with Miller allegedly jumping into the lake earlier that morning, claiming that God was speaking to them and instructing them to do certain things to prove their worthiness to God.
Miller's 15-year-old daughter and her twin 18-year-old sons were able to get out of the water safely on their own. It's unclear if they were aware of Miller's intentions.
The arraignment scheduled for Thursday morning was canceled, and there are no available search results specifying which authority filed charges against Miller or the expected date of the next court hearing. It's also unclear if Miller has retained an attorney.
If convicted on the aggravated murder charges, Ruth Miller could face life in prison. The Tuscarawas County Prosecutor's Office provided a statement to NBC affiliate WKYC of Cleveland regarding Miller's case.
In addition to the aggravated murder charges, Miller is facing additional charges of domestic violence and child endangerment. The details of these charges are yet to be disclosed.
Ruth Miller remains in the hospital for evaluation after making erratic statements. This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Vincen's death.
