Finding Purpose Beyond Paychecks: A Reflection on True Work
Currently between jobs, the author finds themselves at ease, using this period to reflect on their purpose and the true nature of work. They believe that humans are inherently social beings, driven to illuminate the path for others, and that work is about personal growth and contributing to society, regardless of remuneration.
The author distinguishes between an occupation or job and work itself. While a job may provide income, work is about self-improvement and serving others. Even while employed, the author realized there was always more work to be done beyond their job. This interlude has given them the chance to ponder both their job and their work.
Inspired by Baha'i teachings, the author understands that actions done in the spirit of service are a form of worship. They quote phrases from Abdu'l-Baha, such as 'brighten the whole world of humanity', 'live in unity, concord and agreement', 'love one another', and 'acquire virtues', to guide their reflection. The author's true work, they believe, is about self-improvement and contributing to the greater good.
The author is grateful for this opportunity to reflect on their purpose and the nature of work. They are not concerned about immediate income, as they believe that their true work is about serving others and making a positive impact on society. This period has allowed them to realign their priorities and focus on what truly matters.
