Express Entry's STEM Category Sees Major Changes, Affecting Eligibility and CRS Scores

The Express Entry system has seen significant changes in the STEM category. Nineteen occupations have been removed, while six new ones have been added, affecting the eligibility of many foreign nationals. These updates could impact the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut-off scores for category-based draws.

The updated STEM category now includes 11 occupations. Newly added roles are Civil Engineering Technologists and Technicians, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technologists and Technicians, Geological Engineers, Mechanical Engineering Technologists and Technicians, Mechanical Engineers, and Insurance Agents and Brokers. Eligible occupations must match the requirements listed for the STEM category.

Qualifying for a STEM draw can lead to a lower CRS cut-off score, increasing the chances of receiving an invitation to apply for permanent residence. In 2024, the STEM draw had a CRS cut-off of 491, lower than general and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draws. To be eligible for a category, candidates must have at least six months of full-time work experience in an eligible occupation within the past three years. The Government of Canada's National Occupation Classification (NOC) page and the Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) webpage can help determine eligibility.

The changes to the STEM category in Express Entry have opened up new opportunities for some foreign nationals while closing them for others. Those who qualify for the updated STEM category may have a better chance of receiving an invitation to apply for Canadian permanent residency due to potentially lower CRS cut-off scores in category-based draws.
