Evangelicals in Europe Divided on EU Ahead of Elections

Evangelical Christians in Europe hold varied views on the European Union (EU) ahead of the European Parliament elections. While some are encouraged to engage and vote, others express concerns about the EU's secular nature and policies. Meanwhile, Evangelical Focus is seeking support through the #OneMoreYearEF campaign.

Historically, conservative Christians and evangelicals have maintained a distance from the EU due to its secularist trends. This sentiment is shared by French and Italian evangelicals who tend to focus more on national government issues. However, the European Evangelical Alliance is urging Christians to actively participate and vote in the upcoming European Parliament elections.

On the other hand, some evangelicals view the EU as part of the problem, with a continent that has abandoned its Christian roots. They believe the EU's promotion of LGBTQI policies, as seen by Romanian evangelicals, is a push towards sinful ideologies. Dutch evangelicals, meanwhile, are wary of a 'monstrous European supers-state' that could threaten national sovereignty, which they see as connected to their dearest convictions.

Despite these concerns, some evangelicals see the EU as a window of opportunity for Gospel advancement, thanks to the current freedom of religion. They view the EU as having little impact on their daily lives, making it distant but not entirely irrelevant.

As the European Parliament elections approach, evangelical Christians in Europe are grappling with their stance on the EU. While some are encouraged to engage and vote, others express concerns about the EU's secular nature and policies. Despite these differing views, the #OneMoreYearEF campaign by Evangelical Focus is encouraging supporters to contribute to its mission.
