Enhancing Supervisor Capabilities with Communication and Leadership Training: The Resurgence of Crucial Conversations and Crucial Influence this Autumn
The Office of Human Resources is offering a unique professional development program this fall - Crucial Conversations. This 4-week in-person series, held on North Campus from Oct. 6 to Oct. 27, runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day.
The Crucial Conversations program is designed for supervisors and managers, helping them recognise when a conversation becomes "crucial" and work through disagreement to achieve better results in an honest and respectful way with confidence. The program aims to equip leaders with tools to navigate high-stakes discussions and drive meaningful behavior change within their teams.
Participants will engage in instruction, application, practice, group discussion, and self-reflection for lasting improvement. Learning outcomes include identifying problems contributing to poor results and broken relationships, keeping composure in emotionally charged conversations, identifying assumptions, rebuilding safety, finding mutual purpose with opposing viewpoints, and turning crucial conversations into a course of action that leads to results.
For those in leadership positions, Crucial Influence offers an additional opportunity. This program empowers leaders and supervisors to create sustainable change by understanding the psychology of behavior and motivation. Participants will learn how to influence others effectively through hands-on practice and real-world application.
Crucial Influence is a separate program from Crucial Conversations, open to all employees (but geared toward those who supervise others). Learning outcomes for Crucial Influence include identifying key behaviours that drive results, diagnosing challenges using six sources of influence, and engaging multiple sources of influence to overcome persistent and resistant behaviours.
Space is limited in Crucial Influence, and early registration is encouraged. The cost for Crucial Influence is $350 per participant (departmental approval required).
Registration for the Crucial Conversations program is open, and interested individuals can join a waitlist for a future session if the current dates do not work. For questions about either program, email Pam Gavenda, associate director of organizational development and training and Crucial Conversations/Crucial Influence certified trainer.
