Engaging Chemistry Demonstrations Encouraging Young People's Interest

In the heart of Austria, the Polytechnic School Oberpullendorf turned into a hotbed of scientific inquisitiveness, innovation, and collaboration, playing host to a week-long extravaganza of science. An education project named "Metalcamp" upstaged the usual school routines, taking centre stage at the 18th project competition of the Austrian Chemistry Teachers' Association (VCO).

Under the banner of "Green Chemistry", a select group of students from the school spent countless hours diving into the world of eco-friendly methods and modern chemistry. Project leader Stefan Frank, a seasoned professional, served as the guiding light, helping the students craft a superb exhibit showcasing experiments, posters, and demonstrations that left visitors utterly impressed.

The focal point of the project were the live experiments, where the students brought chemistry to life for the participants through touch, provoking a sense of fascination and learning. Demonstrations of electrolysis of water with its legendary knock gas reaction; magnesium continuing to burn in a carbon dioxide atmosphere; and a burning sugar cube with wood ash acting as a catalyst, gave a true taste of the beauty of chemistry.

The icing on the cake was the Thermit experiment that took place in front of the school building, simulating the welding of railway tracks. With blinding heat and light, it demonstrated the practical applications that lie hidden in chemical reactions while showcasing the level of expertise and preparation it requires.

Poster presentations, open dialogue, and homely treats completed the evening, marking a clear indication that career orientation encompasses way more than just conventional workshop lessons.
