Encouraging Guidance to Combat Youth Joblessness
In an effort to tackle Kenya's escalating youth unemployment issue, a new mentorship initiative has been introduced. The MD Mentorship Programme, a collaboration between Treasure Communications and Generation Kenya, is set to run for the next five years.
The programme's first cohort comprises 20 participants, each embarking on a 12-month mentorship journey divided into four phases. The initial phase concentrates on self-awareness and classroom instruction.
The programme is designed to equip young people with leadership qualities, professional networks, and industry exposure to enhance their employability. It aims to prepare participants for leadership roles and transform their career trajectories, not just within Treasure Communications, but across the marketing sector.
The MD Mentorship Programme also seeks to build networks and skills that positively impact the industry. It is tailored to cultivate a new generation of leaders who can adapt to market demands and drive innovation.
Participants will have the opportunity to step into the role of an MD for a day, providing firsthand experience in executive decision-making. The subsequent phases include practical exposure to brand management, leadership simulations, and market immersion.
The launch of the MD Mentorship Programme follows a similar initiative by Development in Action (DEVA), which saw 75 participants in its first cohort. The unemployment rate among young people aged 15 to 24 in Kenya was 11.93% in 2024, slightly lower than 2023's 12.01%, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).
Mworia, the CEO of Treasure Communications, stresses the need for transforming the entire marketing landscape. The mentorship programme does not seem to involve any advertisements, focusing instead on providing authentic opportunities for youth development.
