Educator Opens School for Peace in Israel, Fostering Diverse Friendships

Odel Rose, a 50-year-old educator, has realized his dream of opening the Eastern Mediterranean International School (EMIS) near Tel Aviv. The school, which focuses on community service and fostering friendships between diverse students, has 140 pupils from around the world, including Israel, Palestine, and countries without diplomatic ties with Israel.

Rose, inspired by his experience at Pearson College in Canada, part of the United World College movement, aims to replicate that model in Israel. EMIS, which opened its doors with just 12 students, now boasts a student body that is 40% Israeli Jews or Arabs, with another 20% Palestinian or from the Middle East. Almost all students receive scholarships funded by charities, private donors, and Israel's Ministry of Education.

Students at EMIS volunteer at local refugee centers and Arab children outreach programs, and even travel to Jordan to assist at Syrian refugee settlements. The school's focus on community service and fostering friendships between diverse students reflects its mission to create a multicultural educational environment that promotes dialogue and understanding among young people from divided communities in the region. Rose hopes to open more schools like EMIS if he can secure the necessary funds.

EMIS, founded by Odel Rose, stands as a beacon of hope and unity in the diverse and often divided region of the Eastern Mediterranean. With its focus on community service and multicultural understanding, the school has the potential to inspire similar initiatives and foster a new generation of leaders committed to peace and cooperation.
