The Institut de Gemmologie de Madagascar (IGM): A Beacon of Gemmological Education in Africa

Nestled on a hill overlooking the vibrant city of Antananarivo, or 'Tana', the Institut de Gemmologie de Madagascar (IGM) stands as a unique gem in the African continent. As the only such school in Africa, it is dedicated to the study and identification of gemstones, with a mission to advance gemmological knowledge across the region.

Recognized as a Gem-A Accredited Teaching Centre (ATC), the IGM offers a range of courses that are internationally recognized and highly respected within the industry. These courses, taught in both English and French, cover various aspects of gemmology, including gemstone identification, grading, and certification, all in line with the standards of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A).

The IGM's curriculum is designed to cater to professionals in the gemstone industry, such as miners, traders, jewelers, and researchers. The institute takes pride in producing many excellent graduates who are making significant contributions to the gem industry in Madagascar and beyond.

One of the key highlights of the IGM is its annual lapidary competition, which has two levels: Basic and Master. This competition attracts students from various African countries and provides an opportunity for participants to showcase their skills and compete for recognition. Barbara Kolator, a Gem-A tutor, is among the panel of judges for this prestigious event.

The IGM's gem testing laboratory is another testament to its commitment to excellence. Here, staff members utilise learned gemmological skills such as observation, Refractive Index (RI) measurement, Specific Gravity (SG), and soon, Raman Spectrometry. This cutting-edge facility ensures that the IGM remains at the forefront of gemmological education and research.

The IGM is not only a hub for learning but also a lively and dynamic workplace. People go about their work with a sense of purpose, contributing to the institute's mission of advancing gemmological knowledge. Furthermore, some staff members regularly attend the Gem-A Conference in November, further expanding their knowledge and network within the industry.

Affordable accommodation is readily available near the IGM, making it accessible for students and professionals from all walks of life. The spacious and well-equipped facilities at the IGM make for an ideal environment for learning and research.

In conclusion, the IGM plays a pivotal role in the development of gemmological expertise in Madagascar and Africa. By providing internationally recognized gemmology courses, hosting competitions, and maintaining a state-of-the-art gem testing laboratory, the IGM is fostering professionalism, transparency, and market trust in the gem trade. Its affiliation with Gem-A and its inclusion in regional business federations underline its recognised status in education and industry networks.
