Des Moines Superintendent Detained by ICE, Resigns After License Revoked

Ian Roberts, the superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, has been detained by ICE and will resign from his position, his attorney confirms. The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners has revoked his administrator license following a state-level investigation and weapon possession charges.

Roberts' troubles began in February 2020 when he was charged with weapon possession. He was found with a loaded handgun and $3,000 in cash. Last week, ICE detained him due to a final order of removal and lack of work authorization. Roberts entered the U.S. on a student visa in 1999 but received a final order of removal in May 2024.

During his hiring process for the superintendent role, Roberts provided a driver's license and Social Security card as documentation of citizenship. However, these documents were later found to be insufficient. The Des Moines School Board has placed Roberts on unpaid administrative leave and demanded proof of work authorization. A state-level investigation into Roberts' hiring is currently underway, led by Iowa Rep. Zach Nunn.
