Demonstration of Suitable Flora for Consumption in Hawaii

Get ready for the "Variety Showcase" happening in Kona! This exciting event, brought to you by the Culinary Breeding Network, is taking place at the Outrigger Kona Resort &Spa on Wednesday, 21st of May, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The Bayview Grounds will be the location, and let me tell you, this ain't no ordinary plant exhibition!

What's on the menu, you ask? Here's a sneak peek: over two dozen booths packed with information and tasty samples of various crops. From familiar local favorites like bananas, mangoes, and avocados, you'll also get to meet the breeders of crops such as sugarcane, sweet potatoes, cassava, carrots, and roselle.

Don't forget to talk to Glenn Teves about his kabocha squash cultivars and check out the multiple sugar cane varieties at Noa Lincoln's booth. Plus, get insightful advice from local agricultural organizations and learn about turmeric cultivation from Ted Radovich. Our very own University of Hawaii breeders will showcase their garlic success, and The 'Ulu Cooperative won't disappoint with the latest and best breadfruit and taro varieties.

Ken Love, representing the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers, will share some exciting new exotic fruits, like the maprang from Southeast Asia and the achachiru from the Amazon. Come chat with him and learn more about growing dwarf fruit trees.

Most booths will have samples and chef-prepared bites showcasing their crop. You'll be spoiled with culinary creations from chefs like Makani Mills, Nami Kaze Hawaii, and Waimea Butcher Shop, just to name a few. And don't forget to grab some seeds from the Hawaii Seed Growers Network!

Tickets are only $40 for the public, and you can get them at https://tinyurl.com/5a7e9zfk. If you're a farmer, drop Lane Selman an email at [email protected] to snag the reduced $25 rate. You won't want to miss this if you have any interest in locally grown food crops!

This event is designed to foster conversations and community among plant breeders, seed growers, farmers, chefs, retailers, distributors, and consumers wanting to be a part of enhancing our local food system. It's a fantastic opportunity to meet researchers, breeders, and growers, as well as chefs and culinary enthusiasts. It's gonna be a real hoot, so mark your calendars and we'll see you there!
