Deloitte introduces WorldClass - a global empowerment program
Deloitte, a global consulting firm, has announced the launch of its WorldClass initiative in Ghana, with a goal to refurbish and stock eight libraries in rural and underprivileged schools by 2030. The project aims to positively affect over 35,000 children, contributing to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4 focused on quality education.
Deloitte's WorldClass initiative globally plans to equip 100 million people for future employment. In Ghana, they have partnered with Spring-UP Global Network, a youth-led non-profit aiming to bridge the literacy divide between urban and rural Ghanaian children, to carry out this objective.
Through this collaboration, eight school libraries will be renovated and restocked, providing secure and suitable learning spaces for over 30,000 Ghanaian children. The partnership also includes the launch of Reading and Writing clubs in the beneficiary primary and junior high schools. Deloitte Ghana employees will commit over 1,000 hours in the first year to reading and mentorship sessions.
Daniel Kwadwo Owusu, the Country Managing Partner of Deloitte Ghana, stated, "Our WorldClass initiative in Africa aims to empower 20 million people by 2030 with the education and skills needed for meaningful employment. Poor literacy skills among children in low-and-middle-income countries can limit their ability to acquire technical skills. As a result, Deloitte Ghana has partnered with Spring-Up Global Network to improve literacy in disadvantaged schools across the country."
Akorfa Ama Akoto, Founder & CEO of Spring-UP Global Network, expressed her excitement about the collaboration: "With 52 percent of children without foundational reading skills residing in Ghana's impoverished regions, there is an urgent need to enhance literacy in rural communities. Through our iRead iLead Campaign, we aim to make education accessible and provide mentorship for all children, thereby minimizing the literacy gap between the rich and poor."
The iRead iLead Campaign, launched by Spring-UP Global Network in 2020, aims to improve literacy and learning environments in rural and underprivileged Ghanaian schools through library refurbishment and the establishment of Reading and Writing clubs. The collaborative effort, starting in October 2022, will initially impact approximately 16,000 lives across six regions.
