Debate set by B.J.F. Society to take place on November 2nd

The Benedict Joseph Fenwick Debating Society, named after the founder of the College of the Holy Cross, was revived in 2023 after a 20-year hiatus. This debating society, which encourages students to engage in intellectual discourse, has been active in hosting debates on a variety of topics, including political and philosophical issues.

The society made a significant comeback with its first public session in over two decades, held on December 2, 2022. Since then, it has continued to thrive, with its most recent debate focusing on the American Dream and civil disobedience in April 2023.

The debates, which are typically held in the Levis Browsing Room, are open to large numbers of students and are covered by the college's news outlet. The society's debates provide a platform for students to stand up for their principles, make their voices heard, express themselves, and have fun.

The B.J.F. Society values inclusivity and welcomes students from all backgrounds to participate. Juan Cortes, co-chair with Kate Sanitni, joined the society early last year to nurture his intellectual confidence and public speaking skills. The society also invites guest judges for its debates, including Fr. Jim Hayes, S.J. and Professor Cynthia [name not provided].

The next debate of the year will be held on Saturday, November 2nd in the Levis Browsing Room at 4 p.m.. The topic for this debate has yet to be announced, but it is sure to be a thought-provoking and engaging event.

For those interested in joining the B.J.F. Society, more information can be found by reaching out to the debating society email, Kate Sanitni, or Juan Cortes. Kate encourages students to participate in the upcoming debate and to become part of this vibrant and intellectually stimulating community.

In line with the Jesuit educational values of the College of the Holy Cross, the B.J.F. Debating Society aims to cultivate knowledge, eloquence, and understanding among students. It is a place where students can engage in meaningful debates, challenge their own beliefs, and grow as individuals.
