In the upcoming 2026 Democratic primary, a fresh face is set to challenge an established name. Liam Elkind, a 26-year-old Yale graduate and Rhodes Scholar, has announced his bid to unseat Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), who has been representing the district since 1992.

Elkind, the founder of Invisible Hands Deliver, an organization that delivered groceries to the elderly during the Covid-19 pandemic, is advocating for a generational shift in Democratic leadership. He believes that the current leadership, including Nadler, is relying on old tactics and failing to rise to the moment, leading to harmful policy outcomes such as cuts to healthcare and food stamps.

Elkind's key political positions include fighting against the Republican agenda and President Donald Trump, ending corruption, banning corporate PAC money, imposing term limits, and addressing issues like housing and voter services. He is also pursuing a Ph.D. about the effects of campaign finance reform on elections.

Despite growing up supporting Nadler, Elkind has respectfully urged the 78-year-old representative to retire, citing his age and perceived lack of energy and mindset for the current political climate. This request for change, however, is not a hostile challenge, but a call for building a bridge to the future politically.

Elkind's campaign is not linked to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), differentiating him from other progressive challengers such as Zohran Mamdani. This distinction is significant, as Elkind and Mamdani have disagreements on issues such as freezing rents, government-owned grocery stores, and the phrase "globalize the intifada."

Elkind's campaign has garnered support from local political figures such as Dan Doctoroff, a former deputy mayor under Michael Bloomberg, and former City Councilman Rafael Espinal. Notable endorsements also include Dan Weiss, the former president and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The endorsement of Mamdani by Nadler has been met with mixed reactions, particularly among moderate and Jewish voters in the district. Some are upset about giving cover to Mamdani, who holds more radical views.

Nadler began his political career in the State Assembly representing the Upper West Side of Manhattan and has been in Congress since 1992. After winning a 2022 primary, he now represents the Upper West and Upper East sides as well as Midtown.

In a local political event this spring, a conversation with Nadler about Trump's policies led Elkind to feel that Nadler's response was unstrategic, prompting him to consider running for office. The primary elections next year promise to be an exciting showdown between the experienced Nadler and the ambitious Elkind.
