City-supported Business Development projects foster small-scale enterprise expansion throughout Cape Town
Cape Town Boosts Local Businesses with High Impact Supplier Development Programme
Cape Town's Economic Growth Directorate is supporting the development of local enterprises through initiatives like the High Impact Supplier Development Programme. This programme aims to unlock financing opportunities, help participants become suppliers of choice within their respective sectors, and foster economic growth and job creation [1][2].
Alderman James Vos, a member of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee for Economic Growth, has been actively involved in promoting local entrepreneurs. He recently visited several companies, including JBS Building Company in Heathfield, Gordian Fence SA in Kuils River, and Lion Industries in Parow, as part of city-supported events [3].
The High Impact Supplier Development Programme is a five-day workshop for 25 SMMEs, designed to improve business strategy and operational capacity. One success story is Suku Nikezela, a Blackheath-based construction firm whose turnover grew from under R5 million to over R20 million and expanded from five to over 50 employees after participating in the programme in 2022 [5]. Another company, Saxonburg Fleet Maintenance based in Blackheath, has reported improvements in financial planning and strategic growth due to the programme [6].
The programme covers key growth drivers such as building a strong sales pipeline, diversifying products and services, improving operational efficiency, enhancing pricing strategies, strengthening balance sheets, reducing business waste, and establishing better market linkages [1]. CEO Carl Cupido credits the programme with helping him think like an entrepreneur.
The 10th Annual Smart Supplier Programme and SMME Showcase took place recently, featuring 50 local businesses. At the showcase, Alderman Vos addressed the businesses, emphasizing the central role of SMMEs in economic innovation and resilience [3]. The event provided an opportunity for participating enterprises from various industries, including construction, manufacturing, and automotive services, to present their offerings to fellow entrepreneurs, corporate buyers, and industry stakeholders [7].

By supporting local businesses and helping them grow, initiatives like the High Impact Supplier Development Programme are contributing to Cape Town's economic growth and job creation efforts.
