Airtel Africa Foundation Launches Tech For Her Program to Empower Women in Tech Across Africa

The Airtel Africa Foundation has announced the launch of its Tech For Her program, a five-week intensive online training initiative designed to equip young women in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia with essential tech skills in Linux Administration, Cybersecurity, and Data Analytics.

At the official unveiling of the program in Uganda, held at Kawempe Public Library, Resty Ayona, Head of Performance and Rewards at Airtel Uganda, highlighted the digital divide that exists for many young women in Uganda and across Africa. Ayona stated that the digital revolution is out of reach for many due to gender bias, limited access, and lack of opportunity.

The Tech For Her program aims to bridge this gap by offering over 100 hours of intensive training through a flexible learning model. This model includes weekend classes for working professionals and weekday sessions for non-working participants. To be eligible for the training, candidates must have basic digital literacy and at least a national diploma in Science and Technology or equivalent higher qualifications.

According to Ayona's team, the program will provide structured mentorship from technology industry leaders for top performers. Furthermore, women who graduate from the program will receive 12 months of continuous skill development support. Top performers from the program will also qualify for internship opportunities at Airtel Africa.

UNESCO reports show that for every 100 men with spreadsheet skills in sub-Saharan Africa, only 40 to 44 women have the same proficiency. Moreover, only 17.3% of African tech startups have at least one female co-founder, and female CEOs lead just 11.1% of these startups, according to the "Diversity Dividend: Exploring Gender Equality in the African Tech Ecosystem 2024" report.

The Airtel Africa Foundation's Tech For Her program aligns with its mission to empower Africa through Digital Inclusion. By providing women with the skills needed to succeed in the tech sector, the program aims to promote digital inclusion and gender equity across these countries.

The initiative has received attention, with Chimp Reports mentioning it in their reports. Ayona and her team demonstrated how to access the training online at the event, making it easy for interested candidates to get started.

With the Tech For Her program, the Airtel Africa Foundation is taking a significant step towards promoting gender equality and digital inclusion in Africa's tech sector. The program is an excellent opportunity for young women interested in tech to gain the skills needed to succeed and make a difference in their communities.
