In a heartbreaking turn of events, a mass panic ensued during high school exams in the Central African Republic, leading to the tragic loss of 29 lives. As per a statement released by the Ministry of Health to the AFP news agency, this chaos was sparked by the explosion of a transformer on Wednesday afternoon, while over 5300 students were busy writing their exams in the capital, Bangui.
Amidst the chaos, students and teachers fled the scene, with some resorting to drastic measures like jumping from the first floor of the school building. An AFP journalist on the ground witnessed the aftermath, with injured individuals being transported away from the scene in ambulances, pickup trucks, and motorbike taxi services.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Minister of Education, Aurelien Simplice Zingas, has vowed to conduct thorough investigations to uncover the true circumstances surrounding the incident. President Faustin Archange Touadera, in a heartfelt video message, extended his condolences to the families, teachers, and fellow students of the deceased.
The Central African Republic, as designated by the United Nations, is amongst the least developed countries in the world. Since a prolonged civil conflict, the nation has been grappling with a complex conflict fueled by violence from rebel groups and disputes over natural resources such as gold and diamonds.
Note: An official judicial investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of the transformer explosion and to identify any individuals responsible. President Faustin-Archange Touadera had announced this decision in response to the unfortunate incident at Barthelemy Boganda High School in Bangui, which resulted in at least 29 deaths and numerous injuries. The investigation is ongoing, with no comprehensive casualty report or details about the findings released as yet. Preparations are underway to clarify the details surrounding the incident and to announce the resumption date for the remaining exams. [Reference 1, 5]
