Ceremony in White Coats Marks the Start of Medical School Expedition
University of Rochester's Class of 2027 Receives White Coats in Traditional Ceremony
The University of Rochester's School of Medicine and Dentistry recently held its 18th annual Robert L. & Lillian H. Brent White Coat Ceremony. The event, held in the Larry and Cindy Bloch Alumni and Advancement Center, marked the transition of the Class of 2027 into the medical profession.
The ceremony was a formal affair, with the 105 students receiving their white coats as a symbol of their commitment to medicine, professionalism, and patient care. The University of Rochester photographer J. Adam Fenster and University of Rochester Medical Center video producer Douglas Buckley captured the ceremony on video, and a video of the event can be found here. Photos from the ceremony can also be found on the University's Facebook and Instagram pages.
The Class of 2027 is a diverse group, with students coming from 26 states and 15 of them born outside the U.S. They speak 23 languages, including ASL. New York, Massachusetts, and California are the top three states represented in the class.
Mark B. Taubman, M.D., who is stepping down as Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, and CEO of the medical center, addressed the class. Taubman spoke about the importance of the biopsychosocial model in treating patients.
Fourth-year medical student Malayna Hocker also spoke during the ceremony, sharing her experiences and advice for the Class of 2027. Hocker advised that students will make mistakes and struggle at times but can still be incredible healers.
Joel Pasternack, M.D., Ph.D., a member of the SMD Class of 1980, delivered the keynote address. David R. Lambert, M.D., senior associate dean for Medical Student Education, Flavia Nobay, M.D., associate dean of Student Affairs, and Christine Hay, M.D., associate dean of Admissions, also participated in the ceremony.

The Class of 2027's transition into the medical profession underscores their interest in health-and-wellness and medical-conditions, as they prepare to treat patients using the biopsychosocial model. Their education-and-self-development extends beyond the classroom, with language diversity and an international perspective fostering a unique learning environment at the University of Rochester's School of Medicine and Dentistry.
