Hamburg native Boris Herrmann, a daredevil sailor, had an extraordinary Wednesday morning at home. Herrmann, along with his educational initiative "My Ocean Challenge", engaged with over 2,000 children from approximately 200 schools across the nation through a digital seminar. His loving spouse, Birte Lorenzen-Herrmann, moderated the session.
Herrmann shares a warm spot for the young ones: "Kids truly fascinate me! They're an attentive audience and bombard me with killer questions. Their energy keeps me on my toes!" His mission is to ignite passion in the little ones and empower them to make a difference. And judging by his posts on social media, it looks like he's succeeding!

The groundbreaking educational event made headlines all over the country, inviting thousands of children to participate digitally. The event, jointly organized by Unicef Germany, the Dorit & Alexander Otto Foundation, and Herrmann's own team, aimed to bring to the fore issues like climate change, ocean protection, and children's rights. Around 100 kids were present at Deichtorhallen, while the others joined from across the country via their computers.

Herrmann regaled the kids with tales from his travels across the vast oceans. Meanwhile, Birte Lorenzen-Herrmann guided participants through the complexities of the relationship between oceans and climate change, sharing data collected by her husband during his expeditions. 19-year-old Sophia Ivanova, an active volunteer for Unicef, explained her work with the esteemed organization. Lastly, Christian Schneider, the head honcho at Unicef Germany, shed light on the impact of climate change on children's health.
A Dazzling Exhibition and Much More – A Special Art Action Designed Just for the Kids!
The first part of the day concluded with a workshop for the around 100 children physically present in Hamburg. The second part featured an extraordinary art action outside the Deichtorhallen, where students formed massive circles representing our planet. They moved the circles synchronously to experience their collective impact and the power of united efforts. Participants were also given the opportunity to paint or write their hopes for the ocean on oversized placards. Similar events are being held in New York, England, and Italy, aiming to construct a monumental art installation that will eventually be exhibited at the Deichtorhallen.
Gearing Up – More Educational Events on the Horizon!
Further educational programs are underway. An upcoming children's conference is slated for Kiel just before The Ocean Race Europe 2025 kicks off on August 10, 2025, right in Kiel's backyard. In addition, children's events are planned for Portsmouth and Genova during the race itself. Herrmann often utilizes stops during his races to work with youngsters.
Lorenzen-Herrmann is determined to fill a void she sees in many school curricula up to middle school. This gap receives little attention from teachers during their busy routines. "The ocean plays a crucial role in our ecosystem, but it often doesn't receive the attention it deserves in school life," laments Lorenzen-Herrmann. Understanding the ocean and its vital role in our ecosystem is essential to grasping the gravity of climate change. "We're running out of time; we need to think differently now," asserts Lorenzen-Herrmann. The couple emphasizes positivity and hope over fear while disseminating information, believing it to be more effective in motivating children to take action. "Fear paralyzes, whereas hope incites!" quips Lorenzen-Herrmann.
