Blog Recap of the Year

With the 2015-2016 academic year drawing to a close, students looking to gain valuable research experience during the summer months have a wealth of opportunities to explore. This year is shaping up to be a roller coaster, with highs, lows, and twists, and summer research could be just the ticket to navigate through it.

Melissa Parnagian, Chief Correspondent of our blog, has been covering the ins and outs of undergraduate research throughout the academic year, and she's not slowing down as summer approaches. In fact, she'll be posting occasional updates about internships, fieldwork, and research-related activities during the summer months.

For those seeking a structured summer research experience, several programs across various institutions are worth considering. Here are some key examples:

  1. TECS REU Program (North Carolina State University): This 10-week summer research internship focuses on textiles, pairing students with labs and faculty mentors. The program culminates in a research symposium, and includes workshops and social activities. Applications for this competitive program closed in March 2025.
  2. LBRN Summer Research Program (Louisiana State University): This program runs from late May to early August 2025, and is open to undergraduates and graduates. Application details are available through program coordinators.
  3. Oak Ridge National Lab Undergraduate Programs: These programs offer full-time summer research lasting around 10-12 weeks, targeting STEM fields. Some programs have citizenship or institutional eligibility restrictions.
  4. University of Kentucky Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships: These fellowships offer diverse funded research or creative work opportunities across disciplines, emphasising transformative hands-on experiences.
  5. Vanderbilt University Undergraduate Research Programs: Vanderbilt offers a wide range of summer research options, spanning disciplines such as data science, chemical biology, clinical research, engineering, nanoscale science, and more.

Many of these programs have deadlines early in the year, run roughly from May to August, and emphasise both research productivity and professional development. Students can find valuable blog updates, application information, and resources on respective university or program websites to prepare effectively and learn about specific requirements and offerings.

These programs collectively provide skill-building workshops, faculty mentorship, peer networking, and final presentations or symposia to showcase student projects. They are excellent pathways for undergraduates seeking early research experience, especially in STEM fields.

As the summer approaches, keep an eye on our blog for updates on these and other summer research opportunities. And remember, even if posts are less frequent due to vacation time, we'll still be here to help guide you on your research journey.
