Aryeh Deri expresses hesitation about potentially making contributions
Last week, during a conversation with students of the Shaar HaMelech Yeshiva on i24NEWS, Aryeh Deri, Member of Knesset and Shas Chairman, made remarks against recruiting yeshiva students into the IDF, even during wartime.
Deri emphasized the importance of the role of Torah learners, specifically yeshiva students, in his stance. He unequivocally stated that the notion of conscripting bnei yeshiva into the Israeli military is unacceptable.
This stance is not new for Deri. He has long advocated for legislation to exempt yeshiva students from military service, and he, along with other Shas party leadership, insists that such legislation must be passed before any judicial reforms proceed.
The opposition to drafting yeshiva students into the IDF is part of a broader ultra-Orthodox political pressure to prevent such drafting. This has led to protests and threats by ultra-Orthodox parties to leave the government if the exemption law is delayed.
Despite intensified IDF efforts to draft haredi men, including yeshiva students, Deri maintains his opposition to such measures and supports legal protections to maintain the exemption status.
These remarks were made in public, as they were revealed by journalist Ari Kalman. They serve as a reminder of Deri's unwavering commitment to the role of Torah learners in Israeli society and his insistence on preserving their exemption from military service.
