ArcX-Forum: African Stakeholders Push for Credible Data, Coordinated Eco-Management

The ArcX-Forum, held last year in Nairobi, brought together African and European stakeholders to discuss Africa's green transition and sustainable development. Delegates emphasized the need for credible data and effective monitoring systems to drive evidence-based policymaking and track progress towards global and African commitments.

Dr. Robert Nasi sounded the alarm on Africa's rapid forest loss, warning of severe economic consequences such as unemployment, desertification, habitat loss, and damage to the tourism sector. Peter Minang underscored the interconnectedness of Africa's ecosystems, stressing the importance of sustainable management of forests, ecosystems, biodiversity, and water resources for food security, development, and economic growth.

Mahaman Bachir Saley highlighted the role of science, technology, and innovation in tackling Africa's pressing challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, food security, energy access, and ocean and coastal management. Agroecology was praised as a critical pathway for transforming agriculture into a driver of both ecosystem health and rural prosperity. Delegates advocated for evidence-based policymaking, research collaboration, and knowledge sharing to strengthen Africa's forest, biodiversity, and ecosystem management. African governments, research institutions, and development partners were urged to adopt a more integrated and coordinated approach to managing the continent's biodiversity and ecosystems.
