First things first: Hey Alia, thanks for taking the time to chat with us today! Let's dive right in. What initially drew you to a career in architecture and how did your education influence your approach to design?

Alia Beyg: Architecture found me from the very beginning. I've always had a passion for creativity and design, and it felt like second nature to me. I knew from a young age that I was meant to be a designer. Studying at Bartlett, UCL felt like a validation of my true calling. But I didn't stop there. I pursued a Master's in Artificial Intelligence in Architecture, which further evolved my path.

I've always believed that art should be at the heart of my work, and architecture offered the perfect blend of creativity with real-world impact. Designing spaces that serve not just their intended function but also improve the quality of life for those who inhabit them is an incredibly fulfilling journey for me. With each project, I try to push the boundaries of design – constantly seeking innovative solutions that positively impact both individuals and communities alike.

Navigating Challenges: Establishing AQUA Architecture was a significant milestone in your career. Can you share some of the challenges you faced along the way and how you overcame them?

Alia Beyg: The growth of AQUA Architecture was rapid, which was certainly fortuitous. But it came with its own set of challenges. Building a RIBA-accredited practice, establishing best practices, and showcasing high-quality capabilities were early milestones. The most significant hurdles, however, were finding exceptional talent and securing landmark projects.

Assembling an exceptional team and acquiring prestigious projects were the keys to our success. Founding my own brand and defining our unique styles allowed me to create designs that command attention, devoid of the compromises often associated with larger corporate practices. Seeing these milestones unfold has been incredibly rewarding.

Art and Sustainability: You've emphasized the importance of efficient, sustainable design throughout your career. How do you balance aesthetic appeal with environmental considerations in your projects?

Alia Beyg: The process of passive and environmental design is intrinsically linked to aesthetic appeal in our projects. We pay careful attention to factors such as sunlight and daylight impact, materiality, and more, to enhance facade designs and openings while optimizing building functionality.

Adopting an environmental approach is not just an option for us – it's an opportunity to create something truly unique. By meticulously fine-tuning facades to integrate with solar impact and energy efficiency considerations, we've learned to craft designs that blend form and function seamlessly. In fact, our facade designs often take inspiration from the surrounding environmental conditions, ensuring a harmonious blend between the two.

Navigating the Globe: You've worked on significant development projects across the globe. Can you discuss a project that was particularly challenging and how you navigated those challenges?

Alia Beyg: Each project presents its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. In our high-rise residential developments, such as the Premier Tower in Woking, navigating complexities imposed by site limitations and local authorities has been particularly challenging. Additionally, working on projects situated in conservation areas or involving listed buildings, like Dorset House, Orchard House, and Warren House hotel, comes with its own set of hurdles.

But obstacles are merely opportunities in disguise. Our team has a knack for finding innovative solutions to challenges, navigating design interventions, coordinating efforts, and paying meticulous attention to technical detailing to ensure successful project outcomes.

Innovating the Future of Architecture: Innovation is at the core of AQUA Architecture's philosophy. Can you provide an example of a project where you pushed the boundaries of architectural innovation?

Alia Beyg: Innovation drives us, inspiring us to continually explore new ideas and progressive systems. Within our team, we've developed strategies like our 'Mindfulness and Wellness' approaches and 'Eco' strategies to guide our designs. These principles not only inform our decisions but also ensure that our projects prioritize the well-being of occupants and the sustainability of the environment.

We've also incorporated cutting-edge technologies like parametric software and AI imaging into our workflow. These tools empower us to create complex forms and structures that would be impossible through traditional methods alone. By leveraging parametric design principles, we're able to generate designs that are not only beautiful but also efficient and sustainable. AI imaging helps us analyze vast amounts of data, providing valuable insights and a deeper understanding of challenges and opportunities in the design process.

Building for Tomorrow: You're deeply involved in social initiatives, such as low-cost housing projects and work in underserved communities. How do you approach making these projects sustainable and socially impactful?

Alia Beyg: Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. In our low-cost housing projects, we prioritize impact on the quality of life for residents and the environment. Our strategies include designing for local climate, incorporating eco-friendly materials, and optimizing energy efficiency. Additionally, we work closely with the local communities to ensure that our designs are tailored to meet their specific needs and cultural context while prioritizing affordability.

As we continue to evolve, we're excited to explore the potential of co-living and micro-apartment concepts to address housing crises. By integrating communal facilities and fostering community engagement, we can create innovative living spaces that not only provide comfortable and functional living arrangements but also promote a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
