Sarah Jessica Parker Emphasizes Independence in Child-Rearing Approach
Sarah Jessica Parker, the 60-year-old actress best known for her role in "Sex and the City," offered insights into her unique parenting philosophy during an extensive interview with "The E! News Sitdown with Bruce Bozzi," aired on May 28. The actress shared how she prepares her children for self-sufficiency in adulthood.
Parker expressed her commitment to educating her children to lead fulfilling lives. She does not believe that there is only one route to becoming an educated person or an autonomous adult. Instead, she encourages experiences that are challenging, hard, satisfying, and self-supporting.
Speaking specifically, Parker stated, "You want them to pursue things that are exciting, difficult, and rewarding, so ultimately, they can take care of themselves, support themselves—emotionally and financially—and become reliable individuals."
Parker's oldest child, James Wilkie (22), having already embarked on an acting career, illustrated her philosophy in action. He recently appeared alongside his father, Matthew Broderick (63), in a CBS series episode called "Elsbeth" in February.
Broderick, who has been married to Parker since 1997, described working with his son as a special experience. "We had two memorable days together. It was enjoyable just hanging out at the craft service table and enjoying snacks. He was nervous initially, but he quickly overcame it. It was an enjoyable experience," Broderick shared.
For Parker, it is essential that her children have choices in life. "I'm keen to see what they'll all do, but I hope they feel that they have choices, that there isn't just one way," said Parker.
Joining James Wilkie, Parker and Broderck also have 15-year-old twin daughters, Tabitha Hodge and Marion Loretta Elwell. Previously, during an appearance on "Jenna and Friends" on April 21, Parker humorously referred to her daughters as a "control study," owing to their distinct personalities.
Despite the limelight, Parker values down-to-earth parenting. She acknowledges that people's impressions of her twin daughters may not always be accurate. However, she described them as "really interesting" and "sweet" with an "inquisitive" nature.
The second season of "And Just Like That...," the continuation of "Sex and the City," featuring Sarah Jessica Parker playing one of the leading roles, premieres on May 29.
