Alexandria City Council & School Board to Discuss Bus to Public Transit Pilot & Long-Range Facilities Plan Tonight
The Alexandria City Council and School Board will meet tonight at 6 p.m. to discuss a pilot program that could transition some high school students from yellow buses to public transportation. The meeting, which is open to the public, will take place at the ACPS Central Office and can also be attended via Zoom Meeting.
The proposed program aims to start in fall 2026 and will use DASH routes to transport students. School board members have previously expressed concerns about the City Manager's recommendation for the pilot. Tonight's meeting will also address the update of the Joint Long Range Educational Facilities Plan, which will guide decisions on school facilities through fiscal year 2040. DASH currently carries around 1,100 students daily with an 87% on-time rate and a low incident rate. The weather is expected to be mostly cloudy with a high near 79°F and calm wind, becoming northeast around 6 mph in the morning. There is a slight chance of showers tonight before 7 p.m., then again after 1 a.m., with a low around 67°F and calm wind. The chance of precipitation is 20%.
Tonight's meeting is an important step in considering the potential changes to student transportation and school facilities in Alexandria. The public is encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion. The next steps for the plan include establishing a timeline, identifying stakeholders, and defining the scope for hiring a planning consultant.
