AfriLabs, the extensive pan-African network of innovation centers, and the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) of Kenya, have sealed a strategic partnership to spark innovation, bolster entrepreneurship, and stimulate inclusive technology development throughout Africa.

Affiliations unite: AfriLabs and Konza Technopolis in Kenya forge a partnership

AfriLabs and Konza Technopolis Partner to Boost African Innovation

Two influential institutions, AfriLabs and the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA), have joined forces to accelerate innovation and entrepreneurship across Africa. The partnership, which is part of AfriLabs' mission to empower Africa's next generation of innovators, aims to unlock investment opportunities within Kenya and impact the broader African region.

The collaboration emphasizes collaborative infrastructure, talent exchange, and knowledge networks. It is designed to jointly design and implement a variety of programs and initiatives, including:

  1. AfriLabs Annual Gathering 2025 (AAG2025): This flagship joint initiative, scheduled for October 7–9 in Nairobi, will see Konza serving as the Strategic Government Partner. The event aims to mobilize national stakeholders, host thematic exhibitions, and facilitate high-level participation focused on shaping Africa’s innovation future.
  2. Tailored soft-landing and mentorship programs for startups to support their growth and capacity building.
  3. Joint venture-building initiatives and innovation showcases to promote collaboration and visibility of innovations.
  4. Startup and Innovation Platform Support, including assistance for innovators with intellectual property registration, technology transfer, and commercialization of technologies.
  5. Collaborative research and development (R&D) in emerging technology fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), clean technology, health technology, and smart infrastructure through joint innovation challenges.
  6. Capacity building and talent development programs, including training sessions, bootcamps, and knowledge exchange events targeted at innovators, policymakers, and ecosystem developers.
  7. Connecting Konza-based startups to the wider AfriLabs network, facilitating access to funding and investor communities across the continent.
  8. Facilitating cross-border linkages, including startup exchanges, shared incubation programs, and enhanced ecosystem collaboration among the over 500 hubs across 53 African countries in the AfriLabs network.
  9. Using Konza Technopolis’ infrastructure as a real-world testbed (sandbox) for piloting smart city solutions and Internet of Things (IoT) innovations developed by African startups.

This multidimensional partnership aims to create resilient and inclusive innovation ecosystems addressing Africa’s pressing challenges while promoting economic growth through technology-driven entrepreneurship.

AfriLabs' executive director, Anna Ekeledo, stated that the partnership is a shared commitment to scaling African innovation. The programs and initiatives are focused on supporting startups, with the ultimate goal of fostering a vibrant and innovative African tech ecosystem.
