Hanumangarh's Mahesh Peshwani: The Unexpected NEET UG 2025 Topper
There he is, Mahesh Peshwani from Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, emerging victorious in the highly competitive National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET UG 2025. With an impressive score of 686 out of 720 marks in his first attempt, he scorched his way to the top spot, defying all odds.
Mahesh never anticipated chasing the coveted NEET UG title. "Hell, I didn't even think I could crack a national-level exam being a kid from a Hindi-medium background," he chuckled. But his elder sister Himanshi, a guiding light, egged him on, proving to him that anything was achievable.
Initially uncertain about attempting NEET, his life took a drastic turn when his sis backed him. With her support and teachers' encouragement, Mahesh stepped into the battleground and soon became the national toast. His dream now? A berth in Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Science and a future as a neurosurgeon.
A Different Whack at Preparation
Mahesh claimed he didn't stick to a rigid timetable. "I'd be studying around six-seven hours daily, but damn it, not by any set schedule. Sometimes, I'd finish my studies in the broad daylight, and sometimes, I'd burn the midnight oil."
English, he admitted, gave him a run for his money. But Mahesh crafted his own method, embracing a fusion of Hindi and English to ensure he grasped the concepts like a boss.
Mahesh's father, Ramesh Peshwani, a government school teacher, couldn't hide his emotions when the key results popped up. "We figured he'd be in the top ten, but becoming the all-India topper? Bloody hell!"
Ramesh added that Mahesh never required pushing to study. In his Class 10 board exams, he clocked an incredible 97 percent.
Three Years in the Making
Mahesh is the first one in his family to aim for medical studies. To reach his dreams, he journeyed to Sikar and hunkered down in a hostel for three years, polishing his skills in pursuit of the exam. His family popped in regularly from Hanumangarh, and they kept in touch via the magic of phones.
Hemlata, Mahesh's mother, who teaches at another government school in Hanumangarh, recalls their sentiment when the results were out. "We told Mahesh to study without stressing the f*ck out. If, at any point, he felt he couldn't haul ass, he should shove it in."
Mahesh credits his parents for granting him the freedom to chart his course. "Damn it, they never shoved any subject down my throat, man. I had complete freedom to decide."
An Arts Kid at Heart
Mahesh hails from Nohar, Hanumangarh, where he initially had his heart set on humanities in Class 11 and dreams of cracking the mighty UPSC exam. "Yep, I was an arts kid at heart, courtesy of my sis Himanshi. She towed me over to biology and schooled me about the exam," he said.
"She was the one who convinced me to jet off to Sikar and get my act together. Now here I am, with the results in my hands," he said.
Currently pursuing an M.Sc., Himanshi herself once harbored dreams of taking NEET but couldn't. "I was working on my B.Ed. at that time. But witnessing Mahesh's dedication, I knew he was the goddamn real deal," she said.
Mahesh credits his parents for allowing him the freedom to choose his own path. "Dude, they never made me take a specific subject. I had full goddamn control."
The NEET UG 2025 exam, administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA), was held on May 4 at over 5,400 centers across 552 cities in India and 14 international locations. Over 22 lakh students swooped in for the exam.
Education-and-self-development and personal-growth are evident in Mahesh Peshwani's journey, as he used his experiences to fuel his learning and strive for success.
