Saxony's bustling realm of craftsmanship demonstrates a notable 6% jump in apprenticeship contracts, two months ahead of the upcoming training year's commencement. By the end of May, an astounding 2,264 agreements have been signed, marking a 128-contract improvement compared to last year. Frank Wetzel, a prominent figure from the Saxon Craftsmanship Association, emphasizes that this young, skilled workforce is the backbone that keeps Saxony's long-established craft businesses competitive in both town and country.

The Enthusiasm Among Women for Traditionally Male Professions

Trends indicate that a sizable 22.3% of the newly agreed apprenticeship contracts involve young women. These aspiring craftswomen often opt for less stereotypical roles such as hairdressers, opticians, dental technicians, and hearing aid acousticians. However, the realm of auto mechanics, electronics, and roofing also witnesses an intriguing increase in female applicants as reported by Wetzel.

Current projections suggest a surge in interest for apprenticeships in the professions of automotive sales, food specialists, butchers, bakers, and roofers, while the usual affinity for automotive mechanics, electronics, and HVAC remains consistent. That being said, more precise predictions would come from local data sources.

A New Approach to Tackle Unfilled Positions

In an effort to fill the existing pool of over 400 vacant apprenticeship positions in around 80 professions, the Saxon craftsmanship sector is actively targeting adventurous applicants. Wetzel observes that attracting individuals with A-levels or university dropouts would be advantageous. Aside from automotive, metalworking, carpentry, masonry, refrigeration technology, and HVAC, employment opportunities abound in unusual but exciting fields such as the art of woodworking or glass-blowing.
