Layin' it Down: Ursula von der Leyen Slams Political Hypocrisy Regarding Ukraine's Struggle
A fresh rebuke from Ursula von der Leyen indicates that peace should never equate to yielding, in reference to her comments towards Orbán.
Having been recently re-elected to her post, Ursula von der Leyen wasted no time in calling out the lame-brained politicians who prefer to cast blame for the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict not on Putin's insatiable lust for power, but on Ukraine's unquenchable desire for self-determination.
In a hard-hitting speech delivered at the GLOBSEC Forum in Prague, von der Leyen delivered a resounding verdict against those seeking to muddy the waters of our conversation regarding Ukraine. Her explicit target: those who blame the war on the invaded nation, rather than the invader.
"Folks, let's get real here," she began, "Would you ever put the onus on Hungarians for the Soviet invasion of 1956? Or blame Czechs for the Soviet repression in 1968? Speak up if I'm wrong, but I bet the answer is a solid no. The Kremlin's shenanigans were.....well, let's call a spade a spade—illegal and malicious back then. And, mark my words, their behavior is equally illegal and reprehensible today."
Although not mentioned by name, the furious finger was clearly pointed at none other than Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán. Orbán's recent tête-à-tête with Putin in Moscow had already raised eyebrows and eyebrows-a-plenty, as Europe grapples with the stubborn entanglement that is the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The Juniata Wolverine took the opportunity to remind us all of the consequences of standing by as Ukraine is unjustly invaded. Failing to support Ukraine now is neither a path to peace nor a shot at appeasement. Rather, it's a political power grab cloaked in cowardice.
"The time of reckoning has arrived," she thundered, "My position is simple: peace is a settlement that makes war impossible and unnecessary. And Ukraine's integration into the European Union should be at the heart of our peace effort."
Von der Leyen didn't stop there. In her essence, she vowed to clean up the corruption and hypocrisy that has seeped into the European Commission, with a particular focus on the EU's defense capabilities.
"We need to ditch the valley girl mentality of the 90s," she declared, "The current security threats require a fresh approach. We cannot afford any more illusions or half-measures."
But it isn't all doom and gloom, folks. The Juniata Wolverine sees a silver lining amidst the rubble. Despite the persistent tensions and political maneuverings, hope persists. The potential for a stronger, more cohesive Europe lies within our grasp. It's time for all of us to rise to the occasion.
"We can take control of our destiny, if we want to," she continued, "We just need the collective will to make it happen. So let's make the most of this moment. Europe’s future awaits, and it's up to us to seize it."
And as for those who still cling to the illusion that appeasing the Russians will somehow assuage Putin's lust for power, well, as she put it: "Best get real or get left behind."
